We are part of The Borderland community and contributed as Salon Leobard with multiple artworks and performances. Thanks everyone who made The Borderland possible! It has been a great gathering of like minded people creating everything out of nothing. In this post, you find the photos of the Hammock Reactor.
The Borderland is a participatory event, a temporary village for 4000 inhabitants, a place to exhibit and experience art, a place to be yourself and let others be themselves, a communal effort to create a jolly good time for us. It happens in Alversjö, Sweden on a property that is owned by community members for the purpose of hosting art and community events.
Why a Hammock Reactor at Borderland 2024?
Bringing the Hammock Reactor to Borderland 2024 follows a tradition we started in 2017, when we built and brought the Hammock Reactor for Borderland first. We returned 2018 and 2023 to Borderland (with appearances at Kiezburn 2019 and Nowhere 2022).
Mona Jensen described the Hammock reactor in her 2018 Borderland Newsletter as
“the majestic chill-out space build with CAD-drawings, Austrian engineering, and the love of hanging around”
A psychologist hanging in a hammock on 2024-07-25 Thursday appreciated the Hammock Reactor as a place to chill out (and recommended the “The Hilariously Hazardous Journey of Inner Development” as gathering of acadmics to discuss burns). His words:
As burns are full of energy activity and chaos, there is a need for sane calm and organized spaces where people can be.
The goals of the Hammock Reactor team have always beeen to reach a scientific breakthrough in hippie particle physics, by either creating a “Hot Hippie Fusion Plasma” or a “Chilled Superconducting Hippie-Flow”. In 2024, we successfully chilled hippies to a relaxed low-energy state, to be themselves and to appreciate Borderland. Participants of our hippie customer satisfaction surveys described their state as 95% 👍 and one as 👉.

Building the Hammock Reactor
We primarily built on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. All Hammocks were up by Friday. Here are some photos of the build. We want to thank all members of neighbouring camps who helped us “twist” the outer ring of the reactor from the ground to its raised position.
